Dog Trainer Miami – Tip of the Day
How long will it take to train a puppy or dog? That is the most common question I receive at Fun Paw Care. I know the question is coming and I hate to say it, but it is impossible to tell and no ethical dog trainer would ever give a guarantee to such a time frame. There is not even an average – sigh!
I wish I could tell clients their dog will be better after one session or 20 but there are so many variables in applied behavior analysis. Each individual and household is so different and how much time and energy each house member can put into the behavior modification protocol will all influence the time frame. Often times not everyone is “on board” with the behavior modification protocol and is sabotaging the behavior modification regiment – yikes!
Behavior change takes time (months or years, not days or weeks) but by addressing the underlying conditioned emotional response and/or conditioned fear response (CER/CFR) and with consistency, repetition, patients and the proper use of positive reinforcement techniques (R+) along with a skilled behaviorist or dog trainer, the time spent will be well worth it. In the end the only one who can decide the pace at which he/she goes is your dog. Behavior is always the study of one.
It is unfortunate that pet parents are so often impatient and in doing so look elsewhere to a less skilled trainer or even worse an outdated/traditional dog trainer (which South Florida is teeming with) and injure themselves and/or their dog. If a pet parent chooses this route one thing is certain – the behavior will get worse or manifest somewhere else, it will be more costly in the long term monetarily, health wise, and behavior wise to the welfare of your pet.
It pays to do things right the first time with patience and a skilled professional who has years of experience applying these techniques and studying them. A behavior problem may never be completely “fixed” but will improve a great deal! With management, a great certified professional dog trainer and behavior specialist, using proper force free techniques, you will be on the way to a much more pleasant household and develop a greater understanding of your pets’ needs.
