Miami Dog Training – Tip of the Day
How to train a puppy?
The assumption is that someone calls us to receive dog training and behavior advice, counseling and help with all things dogs and cats. However the reality is, many people do not want behavior advice and dog training, they want us to verify their own belief systems, often times based on myth, conventional wisdom and reality television shows.
What do dog training parents really want?
Because many people want the latter and for us to placate and extol their greatness, it is incumbent upon a professional to understand how to educate and create behavior change for both animals at the end of the leash. Many clients aren’t actually seeking solutions, the best dog trainers or a sound successful behavior modification protocol, they have their own belief system or philosophies they have been trying, with little success, and want verification, to be stroked and acquiesced. They would prefer we tweaked their unsuccessful attempts than do something scary such as being vulnerable and learning something completely new, that contradict their theories and methodologies. This is the psychology of the job. Not only are we cognizant of a canine’s cognition and ethology, we are also keenly sensitive to people’s psychology and beliefs. Change is hard enough, but being contradicted or guided away from old methodologies and myths of force and intimidation is not always easy for people to swallow. Sometimes believing everything you hear on TV or read on the internet is just not sage advice for you or your dog!
