Dog Joy or Dog Pain: Los Angeles Dog Training
I appreciate science and facts because even the most pugnacious, intransigent, ignoramus will be hard-pressed to argue. If the data changes, so do scientists. Many pet parents may not realize this, but they have the power to choose a relationship with their dog built on fear, dominance, stress, and illness or to choose a healthy life and a loving, peaceful, trusting, understanding, joy-filled relationship with their dog. Which do you choose? But first let’s define a couple of words: delusion, “an idiosyncratic false belief that is firmly maintained in spite of incontrovertible obvious proof or evidence to the contrary” and sociopath, “a person with a psychopathic personality and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.”
The math is pretty simple, here are the facts:
- Shelters are the #1 documented killer of dogs.
- Lack of dog training, education, and behavior problems are the #1 reason dogs are relinquished to shelters1 or become strays.
- Therefore, lack of dog training and behavior problems are the #1 reason dogs are killed every year.
To continue with this logic, one of the most common dog behavior problems is labeled as aggression2. An overwhelming majority of dog aggression is spawned and emanates from fear3 (typically from a lack of socialization). Fear and dog aggression can be modified with a knowledgeable Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and Los Angeles dog training professional by implementing systematic desensitization and counterconditioning, (SD/CC) and habituation through force-free positive reinforcement dog training4. Conversely, not by flooding, kicking or forcing your pet into submission or by being confrontational with your pet. Think about this, would you be “rehabilitated” if you were deathly afraid of spiders and someone’s methods for “curing” you was to throw you into a room and lock the door, and have tarantulas crawling all over you? This is an exposure therapy that no sane therapist would administer and is what flooding is all about and just some of the “rehabilitation” that the sociopathic and delusional reality show host
Jerry Springer Cesar Millan5, and “traditional” or “balanced” dog trainers practice. I do not consider this copacetic, humane or remotely acceptable. This only leaves dogs in a shut-down state of fear, confusion, and distress and with a lack of trust, not in a state of calm homeostasis, love, and trust.
Different Dog Training Methodologies
What is the best way to cure a dog of fear and/or aggression? D/CC through positive reinforcement, force-free dog training.
What is the worst way to cure a dog of fear and/or aggression? Traditional, balanced, force-based, confrontational dog “training”. The best way to increase a dog’s fear, have a dog regress and have other behavior problems manifest, while breaking down the trust between you and your dog, making the fear worse and more intense, you guessed it, is euphemistically labeled “traditional” or “balanced” style dog training, also synonymous with the sociopathic, delusional, reality show Cesar Millan style of dog training: dominance theory6, punitive, aversive7 style, and alpha dog training. These are all synonyms for uneducated, outdated, foolish, abusive training methods practiced by people who are neither compassionate nor uneducated in the school of ethology and cognitive ethology.
Looks can be deceiving especially on a reality show. As a lifelong practitioner and advocate of martial arts, I invite you to watch this presentation on how a minute, seemingly innocuous, benign movement can deliver devastating and even deadly blows. Place this on the soft part of your dog’s neck and trachea and you can only imagine the outcome.
If your idea of pet parenthood is to subjugate your pet, you may want to consider purchasing an inanimate robot. If you want your dog to have a very high percentage of being killed in a shelter, train your dog with dominance theory, “traditional” or “balanced” style dog training, with force, choke chains, pronged and electric collars…etc. Voltaire once observed, “If we believe in absurdities, we will commit atrocities.”
If you want your dog to live a long, loving, well adjusted, well socialized, well trained, well-behaved life and you want to establish an unbreakable bond between you and your pup, choose force-free, positive reinforcement dog training. Want to make a difference? Only frequent veterinarians, rescue organizations, shelters and pet stores who advocate humane and educated force-free members of the Pet Professional Guild (PPG), or Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and Certified Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT).
My indignation is not unwarranted, subjecting innocent sentient beings to unnecessary, inhumane abuse is immoral and unethical. As Bob Dylan prophesied “the times, they are a-changin’”, the Cesar Milan, reality television show hosts, veterinarians worldwide and progressives on all fronts, should be leading this change, not lagging behind.
It is time to use celebrity status, popularity and media for a healthy cause and not to feign dog whispering for ratings and to mislead the hoi polloi at the expense of nonhuman animals. One’s mission statement should read “your commitment to social justice and humane force-free treatment to all sentient beings, through continuing education and science, anything less, is just not good enough.” I would like to leave you with a quote from Dali Lama, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
