Fun Paw Care Tip of the Day
Applied Behavior Analysis is a science and like any science you should go to the proper professional to receive advice on how to modify behavior and solve your home dog training and dog behavior problems. The only independent certification body for professional dog trainers is the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). They offer an exam every year to qualified professionals. If you pass that exam you earn the title Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CDPT-KA) designation.
Always start your search for qualified dog training professionals here regardless of the type of dog training you’re looking for: Therapy dog training, service dog training, obedience dog training, protection dog training or in your home family dog training. The CPDT is the MINIMUM standard and certification body that any serious dog training professional will have. From that pool of candidates you should also narrow down your search criterion. I would also look for a member of the force free, Pet Professional Guild. As any sport and profession goes, there are always different quality professionals. Research, research, research to find the best dog trainer that fits your needs.
Until our government starts to regulate the wild wild west of dog training and behavior, it is incumbent upon you, the pet parents, rescue organization or nonprofit, to do this valuable research before choosing a trainer and behavior specialist to help you and your family.
If you think a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur who relies on force, intimidation, outdated methods and abuse.
